In Me!

I was reading one of my fav's this morning, Henri Nouwem and he was explaining something that I had never thought about, so I figured I'd better just share it with you!

You remember The Walk to Emmaus story in Luke right? Where two of them (Cleopas being one of them) were on their way to Emmaus which is about 7 miles from Jerusalem. Driving, this takes about 15 minutes and it's all down hill. Walking, probably takes closer to a half a day! Jesus had been resurrected and everyone was a buzz with what had just happened. Jesus started walking with these two and explaining to them how the Messiah had to suffer and then entered into his glory. Jesus was going to travel on, but these two urged him strongly to stay with them, so he said sure. Here's the part I want to chat about:

When he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.  Luke 24:30-31

The recognition and the disappearance of Jesus are one and the same event. Why?

Henri says this, Because the disciples recognized that their Lord Jesus, the Christ, now lives in them...that they have become Christ-bearers. So this means that they were the first to "get it"! How cool is that!!?? Jesus doesn't sit across the table from them as a stranger, a guest that they can chat with, a friend whom they can receive good counsel. He has become one with them! Jesus gave them his own Spirit. The companion on their journey has become the companion of their souls! It's the whole, and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me! Galatians 2:20.

Does this blow anyone else's mind but mine? Did I learn this in Seminary? I think the thing that I love the most is that I can picture it and it makes perfect sense to me! Jesus doesn't need to live right beside me, cuz he lives in me!

Cool huh?
