I have to follow up with you about my rut-escaping run yesterday, but first a little background information is in order. Background #1 - When I was at the soup kitchen in Durango, there was a guy named Bubba who put me in the mind of John the Baptist. Not that he ate locusts and honey but that he was preparing the way for Christ everywhere he went. We had lengthy daily talks about what the Bible was telling us and how God was working in our lives. He told me that as he walked through town, God was always telling him that He would provide for him. Then Bubba would find a dime. That day, in some way, God would provide for him. The dime wasn't a lot, but it was how Bubba got conformation from God.
Background #2 - While reading my running magazine one day, I came across an article about this guy, who, every time he went out for a run, found and picked up at least one penny. They showed a picture of a couple hundred pennies with this guy sitting in the middle of it. As I have been here in Rogers, I have asked God to show me when I'm on the right path and when I'm straying off. Before Alex started working, we would go for a morning walk, and I would sometimes find a penny. I was always excited, because I felt like God was wooing me to Him. I started putting the pennies in a bowl my friend Leslie made, and I have a nice little amount going.
Well, Alex got my little iPod shuffle out of hiding, and I downloaded my tunes to it and was ready to go for my run with music, which made me very happy. On my way around the flat-as-a-flitter neighborhood, I came to a song called "Smile" by Uncle Kracker. (Cute, huh? Yeah, he's a white guy.) Here are the words to it. Take a minute to read the words and meet me at the end.
You´re better then the best
I´m lucky just to linger in your life
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow that´s right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me
Lets me know that it´s ok yeah it´s ok
And the moments when my good times start to fade
You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh you make me smile
Even when you´re gone
Somehow you come along
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack and just like that
You steal away the rain and just like that
You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of
bed sing like bird
Dizzy in my head spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh you make me smile
Don´t know how I lived without you
Cuz everytime that I get around you
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed
sing like bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh you make me smile
So I'm running and listening to this song, and I wonder if this is how God feels about me. Could I make Him smile? I know He makes me smile! Then I look down and see a penny! Now had I been running at 5:30, in the dark, I would not have seen this sign from God. So had I not tried to escape the rut I was in, I would not have received this blessing in the form of a penny. To top it off, I was thinking about a girl I went to high school with, Beth Bridges (now Howard). I wondered if I should give her a call to see how she's doing, and I look down and there's a quarter. I came home and sent her an e-mail right away.
My point is not that God speaks through change found on the side of the street. It's that God meets us wherever we are, doing whatever it is we do and is trying to break through to us in any way that we will let Him. If we would only be in the openness of looking, seeking, even wondering, God would break through and speak to us. So won't you try something new today?
